How do you choose your jeans size so the 32/32 on the label fits you? We explain W and L, show how to measure in four steps, share Mustang’s official men’s and women’s size charts in centimetres, and tell you what to do when you’re between sizes.
What does 32/32 on a jeans label mean? The first number is the waist measurement in inches (W, waist), and the second is the inseam length (L, length). So to choose your jeans size, you need to know two measurements of your own body and the size chart of the specific brand, because the same W number doesn’t mean the same centimetres everywhere.
Below are the official size charts the manufacturer publishes for Mustang jeans: one for men and one for women, with waist and hip measurements in centimetres and the German size. You’ll also find a four-step way to measure and what to do when your result is between two sizes.
What W and L Mean on a Jeans Label
- W (waist)
- The waist measurement in inches. One inch is 2.54 cm, but the W number is a size, not the exact measurement of the waistband—the manufacturer’s chart gives the centimetres.
- L (length)
- The length of the leg from the crotch to the bottom of the leg, also in inches. In Mustang’s size chart, L32 is an inseam of 79–83 cm.
- German size
- Mustang is a German brand, so alongside W it lists the DE size: men’s W32 is 46, and women’s W28 is 36.
- 32/32, 34/32
- The “W/L” notation. In men’s Mustang pants, 34/32 means a waist of 87–88 cm and an inseam of 79–83 cm.
The most common question is: what size is a 32 in jeans? At Mustang, W32 means a waist of 81–83 cm in both men’s and women’s models. The German size differs: men’s W32 is 46, women’s is 40/42, and the women’s chart also adds hips of 106–108 cm. It’s similar with W30: a waist of 76–78 cm for men and 75–77 cm for women.
How to Measure Your Waist, Hips, and Inseam
Mustang describes taking measurements in three places. You need a tape measure and someone to help with the leg, because when you bend over your own leg, the result changes.
- Waist. Measure the narrowest part of your torso, between your chest and your navel. The tape should be snug but not tight.
- Hips. Stand with your feet together and measure the widest part of your hips.
- Inseam. Place the tape at the crotch and measure along the inside of your leg down to the ankle.
- Check against a pair of jeans that fit well. Button them, lay them flat, and measure the waistband from edge to edge, then multiply the result by 2. Jeans with a mid or low rise sit lower than the waist, so this number can be larger than your body measurement.
Mustang Jeans Size Chart
The values come from Mustang’s official size chart and refer to body measurements, not garment measurements. Choose the row that contains your measured waist; your hips help when your waist is right on the border between two sizes.

In women’s jeans, the hips are often more important than the waist. In slim and skinny fits, such as Georgia Super Skinny, the fabric hugs the hips, so when your waist and hips point to different rows, go by your hips. In wide fits the waist matters more. You can see the whole range in the women’s Mustang jeans category.

Length L: How to Choose the Inseam
The length chart is the same for men’s and women’s models. L numbers go up every two inches, so each one covers about 5 cm of leg, and the middle of the range is roughly L × 2.54 cm.
| L | Mustang inseam (cm) | L × 2.54 cm |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | 74–78 | 76.2 |
| 32 | 79–83 | 81.3 |
| 34 | 84–88 | 86.4 |
| 36 | 89–93 | 91.4 |
| 38 | 94–98 | 96.5 |
| 40 | 99–103 | 101.6 |
You measure the inseam without shoes, but you choose it for the shoes you’ll wear. With sneakers and loafers, a straight leg can end just above the upper; with lace-up ankle boots, an extra centimetre of length helps so the fabric doesn’t ride up when you sit down. Slim fits such as Vegas Slim bunch up at the bottom with a longer L, while wide ones such as Madison Wide drape over the shoe. How the cut of the leg changes your silhouette is covered in our guide to men’s jeans fits.
Stretch or 100% Cotton: Should You Size Down?
You’ll find the fabric composition on each model’s product page. In Mustang’s range the differences are big:
- Tramper 1018261: 100% cotton, no added elastane.
- Michigan Straight 1018272: 98% cotton and 2% elastane.
- Vegas Slim 1018381: 92% cotton, 6% polyester, and 2% elastane.
- Madison Wide 1016596: 78% cotton, 10% lyocell, 9% elastomultiester, and 3% elastane.
Elastane doesn’t change the size, only the way jeans sit on the body. In its size guide, Levi's says that stretch denim holds its shape better even after many wears, while raw denim made of 100% cotton is stiff at first and only breaks in over time. Mustang’s size chart has no separate sizes for stretch, so buy by centimetres and treat being able to button them without sucking in your stomach as the minimum.
When You’re Between Sizes
A waist of 84 cm is W33 in the men’s chart, while 83 cm is already W32. With a result like that, decide whether you prefer jeans closer to the body or looser—Levi's gives the same advice. In women’s jeans, the hips often tip the balance: with a waist of 71 cm and hips of 98 cm, the waist points to W28 and the hips to W29. In Georgia Super Skinny, W29 will then work better; in Madison Wide, W28.
Choose the smaller W when…
- the model has 2–3% elastane,
- the fit is straight or wide and you wear your jeans with a belt,
- your hips fit the smaller size.
Choose the larger W when…
- the model is 100% cotton,
- the fit is slim or skinny and your hips exceed the range of the smaller size,
- you sit a lot or wear your jeans under a thicker sweater.
If the waist is a bit loose, a belt helps; at the time of writing, the men’s Mustang belts category has 69 models. If the jeans don’t fit, you can exchange them for the same model in a different size. The shop asks you to check first whether the size you need is available—the rules are described on our returns, exchanges, and complaints page.
Where to start? Measure your waist and hips, find your row in the chart, then choose the fit, and pick the length L last. You can check the shoe size to go with your new jeans in our shoe size chart.
